Oraedium, the Seer Mother

Cynta casts second sight while scrying into a crystal ball—for a paying customer, of course.

DCC’s occupations provide a rich starting ground for inventing new deities. In Part IV of Bret Devereaux’s series on polytheistic religions, he notes how the ancient world was full of “smaller more personable gods”—household gods, gods of places, and gods of activities or moments. It makes sense to me that a cleric may be predisposed to serve a deity related to their profession, who they worshiped or depended upon before they became an adventurer. As a cleric, they can now proselytize on behalf of this deity. (To be clear, I’m not saying that all players need to create their own deity, or that they should be limited to deities based on their occupation. I’m simply highlighting another way to expand the DCC pantheon.)

Oraedium, the Seer Mother, is a chaotic goddess of clairvoyance, fortune, and premonitions. Her name is a portmanteau of “oracle” and “medium.” I was inspired to create her after a player leveled up their fortune teller as a cleric. My deity template for Oraedium draws upon that found in the DCC Annual, but also includes tenets, omens, and sacrifice instructions as explained in my post on rethinking deity design.
